Sustaining the Subscription Program

While the bakery was operational, various means of fundraising were employed to try to sustain the subscription program and also to get the word out about the bakery and generally participate in our community:

  • Bake Days (sliding scale prices; see for example…
  • Cakes & Catering (sliding scale prices)
  • Indiegogo Campaign
  • Vending at Markets & Festivals (sliding scale prices)
    • We went to festivals!  We sold cupcakes, cookies and granola at Pride for several years.  We had bake goods & talked with folks at the city’s Build a Better Block with Tootie party, the Holiday Fun Fest (see the Holiday Fun Fest zine), and the Durham Nutcracker.  We gave away bread at Moral Mondays and twice at HKonJ.  We were vendors at the Green Flea Market and Chapel Hill Farmers Market (see lists for CHFM from 8/24/13 and 9/28/13).  Preparation time could be intense, and there were mixed feelings about how these events played into our mission.
  • Wholesale Vending (fixed price)
    • Spice Bazaar, Kings, Respite, LoMo, Papa Spuds – We had mixed feelings about vending in these various environments & the relationship between this work and our mission.  Some folks were great to work with, others not so much.  It felt very different baking for people with whom we weren’t in direct relationship.
    • See this Wholesale Offerings sheet for an example of what we shared with select local businesses.
    • See these December 2, 2012February 13, 2013April 26, 2013, & December 19, 2013 (final wholesale zine) zines for examples of what we distributed with wholesale bread.
